The Deepdark Scholars are a clandestine research organization operating within the Dwarven-Holds, dedicated to understanding the Deepdark creatures and the tunnels beneath the Ironspine-Mountains. Officially, the organization does not exist — no records mention it, no dwarves acknowledge it, and the Stone-Throne has officially declared all research into the Deepdark tunnels to be the exclusive domain of the Earthbound-Order. In reality, the Deepdark Scholars represent a significant faction within dwarven academic and intelligence circles, working in opposition to the Earthbound-Order’s policy of sealing and abandoning the tunnels.

Origins and Formation

The Deepdark Scholars were formed approximately 35 years ago, shortly after Morvaine’s emergence from the Deepdark. A group of dwarven researchers — geologists, earthmages, linguists, and historians — recognized that the Earthbound-Order’s sealing operations were destroying irreplaceable evidence about the Deepdark creatures’ origins, behavior, and structure. Forming an underground research collective, they began systematically collecting data from Morvaine’s account, Rift-Watch patrol reports, and independent tunnel reconnaissance.

The organization’s founding members included:

4. The Liaisons: Maintain contact with outside researchers, including Archmage-Seraphina-Dusk’s team at the University-Of-Valoria and certain members of the The-Gardener’s intelligence network. The Liaisons ensure that information collected by the Deepdark Scholars reaches the wider academic community, even if the Scholars themselves remain unknown.

The Deepdark Scholars’ activities have drawn the attention of several major powers:

• The Stone Throne: Officially opposes all Deepdark research, considering it a waste of resources that should be devoted to sealing operations. Unofficially, certain Stone-Throne factions have quietly funded Deepdark Scholar operations, recognizing the strategic value of understanding the creatures’ origins.

• The Earthbound Order: The Earthbound-Order considers the Deepdark Scholars to be dangerous heretics who are sabotaging critical sealing operations. The Order has dispatched earthmage teams to locate and shut down Scholar facilities on at least two occasions. The relationship between the two organizations is openly hostile.

• The Gardener: The Crown’s intelligence network has identified the Deepdark Scholars through intercepted communications and has established a covert relationship with the organization. The The-Gardener provides the Scholars with intelligence about Earthbound-Order operations in exchange for access to their research findings.

• The Rift Watch: Certain Rift-Watch commanders have cooperated with the Deepdark Scholars, providing access to patrol reports and tunnel entrance data that the Scholars could not obtain independently. This cooperation is unofficial and unacknowledged by the Rift-Watch’s leadership.
