Deepdark Scholars
The Deepdark Scholars are a clandestine research organization operating within the Dwarven-Holds, dedicated to understanding the Deepdark creatures and the tunnels beneath the Ironspine-Mountains. Officially, the organization does not exist — no records mention it, no dwarves acknowledge it, and the Stone-Throne has officially declared all research into the Deepdark tunnels to be the exclusive domain of the Earthbound-Order. In reality, the Deepdark Scholars represent a significant faction within dwarven academic and intelligence circles, working in opposition to the Earthbound-Order’s policy of sealing and abandoning the tunnels.
Origins and Formation
The Deepdark Scholars were formed approximately 35 years ago, shortly after Morvaine’s emergence from the Deepdark. A group of dwarven researchers — geologists, earthmages, linguists, and historians — recognized that the Earthbound-Order’s sealing operations were destroying irreplaceable evidence about the Deepdark creatures’ origins, behavior, and structure. Forming an underground research collective, they began systematically collecting data from Morvaine’s account, Rift-Watch patrol reports, and independent tunnel reconnaissance.
The organization’s founding members included:
- Dr. Brynhild Stoneheart: A geologist who mapped the upper tunnel systems before the sealing operations began
- Thrain Ironbeard II: A linguist specializing in First-Empire inscriptions (not related to the Stone-Throne)
- Brenna Stoneshield: A young earthmage who later became a field partner of Archmage-Seraphina-Dusk
- “Doctor Ash”: An anonymous researcher whose true identity remains unknown; this person conducted the only recorded interview with Morvaine
Organizational Structure
The Deepdark Scholars operate through a cell-based structure designed for maximum security:
-
The Archivists: Maintain and catalog all collected data, including Morvaine’s interview transcripts, the stone tablet she carried, and the Rift-Shards fragment she left behind. The Archivists work from a hidden facility beneath Khazad-Dum, connected to the Underway through a secret entrance.
-
The Surveyors: Conduct independent tunnel reconnaissance missions, mapping the upper levels of the Deepdark tunnels that the Earthbound-Order has sealed. Surveyors are typically young dwarven earthmages who have been trained to detect Deepdark creature activity without triggering the creatures’ attention.
-
The Interceptors: Monitor Earthbound-Order operations and attempt to intercept data, artifacts, and specimens before they are sealed away or destroyed. The Interceptors have been accused of sabotaging Earthbound-Order sealing operations on at least three occasions.
-
The Liaisons: Maintain contact with outside researchers, including Archmage-Seraphina-Dusk’s team at the University-Of-Valoria and certain members of the The-Gardener’s intelligence network. The Liaisons ensure that information collected by the Deepdark Scholars reaches the wider academic community, even if the Scholars themselves remain unknown.
Morvaine’s Interviews
The Deepdark Scholars’ most significant achievement was securing Morvaine’s cooperation after her emergence. Through “Doctor Ash,” the Scholars conducted approximately 47 recorded interviews with Morvaine over the six months she was in public view. These interviews contain:
- Detailed descriptions of the Deepdark creature hierarchy (Brood-Mothers, Workers, Hollows)
- Accounts of the First-Empire necromancy laboratory found deep within the tunnels
- Morvaine’s identification of the “Throat” and the corrupted Deep-Song signal
- Physical evidence: a stone tablet with First-Empire inscriptions, creature remains, and a single Rift-Shards fragment
The interview transcripts are classified at the highest level within the Dwarven-Holds and have only been shared with a select group of trusted researchers. The Stone-Throne has attempted to confiscate these records on multiple occasions, but the Deepdark Scholars have successfully hidden them in sealed chambers beneath Khazad-Dum.
Relationship with Other Powers
The Deepdark Scholars’ activities have drawn the attention of several major powers:
-
The Stone Throne: Officially opposes all Deepdark research, considering it a waste of resources that should be devoted to sealing operations. Unofficially, certain Stone-Throne factions have quietly funded Deepdark Scholar operations, recognizing the strategic value of understanding the creatures’ origins.
-
The Earthbound Order: The Earthbound-Order considers the Deepdark Scholars to be dangerous heretics who are sabotaging critical sealing operations. The Order has dispatched earthmage teams to locate and shut down Scholar facilities on at least two occasions. The relationship between the two organizations is openly hostile.
-
The Gardener: The Crown’s intelligence network has identified the Deepdark Scholars through intercepted communications and has established a covert relationship with the organization. The The-Gardener provides the Scholars with intelligence about Earthbound-Order operations in exchange for access to their research findings.
-
The Rift Watch: Certain Rift-Watch commanders have cooperated with the Deepdark Scholars, providing access to patrol reports and tunnel entrance data that the Scholars could not obtain independently. This cooperation is unofficial and unacknowledged by the Rift-Watch’s leadership.
Current Activities
The Deepdark Scholars are currently engaged in several major research projects:
-
The Throat Expedition: Planning a major expedition to locate and access the cavern system that Morvaine called “the Throat,” where the First-Empire artifact emitting the corrupted Deep-Song signal is located. This expedition would be the most dangerous deep-tunnel operation ever attempted by surface dwellers.
-
The Creature Catalog: Maintaining an ongoing effort to catalog and classify all known Deepdark creature species, based on Morvaine’s descriptions, Surveyor field observations, and specimens recovered from sealing operations.
-
The First Empire Connection: Investigating Morvaine’s claims that the Deepdark creatures were originally created by First-Empire necromancy experiments. The Scholars have identified several First-Empire sites in the Ironspine region that may have been used for these experiments.
The Deepdark Scholar Question
The single most debated question among the Deepdark Scholars is whether to attempt a major expedition to the Throat. The implications of such an expedition are enormous:
- If Morvaine’s account is correct, the First-Empire artifact at the Throat is still active and continuing to emit the signal that directs the Deepdark creatures
- Destroying or neutralizing the artifact could end the Deepdark incursion without requiring the continued expenditure of resources on sealing operations
- However, the expedition would require entering the deepest, most dangerous levels of the Deepdark tunnels — a suicide mission for most dwarven earthmages
The debate has divided the organization into two factions: the Expeditors, who advocate for a major push to the Throat, and the Preservationists, who argue that the Scholars should focus on data collection and analysis rather than risking their lives in dangerous expeditions.
The Throat Expedition — Current Planning
As of approximately 2026, the Deepdark Scholars have moved from theoretical discussion to active planning for a Throat expedition. Several factors suggest this is no longer purely academic:
-
Equipment Development: The Scholars’ engineering team has spent three years developing specialized diving and climbing gear rated for extreme pressure and unknown chemical compositions. Their most significant innovation — a breathing apparatus based on Rift-Shards resonance principles that filters air by vibrational frequency rather than chemical filtration — represents a breakthrough that makes deep-tunnel survival potentially feasible
-
Timeline Constraints: Archmage Seraphina Dusk’s latest measurements suggest that the corrupted Deep Song signal at the Throat is increasing in amplitude by approximately 0.3% per year. If this trend continues, the Scholars estimate they have between 15 and 20 years before the signal reaches a level that could destabilize the Ironspine Mountains’ structural integrity — creating what Dr. Brynhild Stoneheart has termed “the geologic deadline”
-
Personnel Selection: The Expeditors faction has compiled a roster of approximately 30 candidate volunteers, drawn from Surveyor team veterans and dwarven earthmages with documented Deep Song sensitivity. The Preservationists have countered by demanding that any expedition include at least two independent observers — preferably scholars who could continue the research even if the expedition fails
-
University Coordination: In a significant development, Archmage-Seraphina-Dusk has agreed to provide academic oversight for the expedition’s resonance measurement protocols. Her involvement suggests the University of Valoria may eventually endorse what is currently an unilaterally dwarven operation — a shift that would dramatically increase both resources and political risk
-
The Gardener’s Interest: Intelligence reports suggest the Crown’s spymaster has been quietly funding Deepdark Scholar operations for approximately five years, with specific allocation toward expedition preparation. The scale of this support suggests that King-Alaric-Iii may have personal strategic reasons for wanting to understand the Throat artifact — possibly related to its connection to Shadow-Council activities or the broader geopolitical implications of neutralizing an unknown threat
