Resonance Scavengers
The Resonance Scavengers are a specialized network of independent operators and small teams operating along the Shattered-Coast who harvest resonant magical energy from Echo-Dead zones before it dissipates into Dead-Magic. Unlike the The-Rust-Kings, who scavenge physical artifacts from First Empire ruins, the Resonance Scavengers extract something far more ephemeral — structured echoes of past events captured in dead magic, which they bottle, refine, and sell to practitioners across Aethelgard.
Overview
The Resonance Scavengers have no formal headquarters or unified leadership structure. Instead, they operate as a loose network of independent teams, each specializing in different types of resonance extraction and serving different client bases. What unites them is a shared methodology derived from fragmented First Empire resonance theory — techniques that allow practitioners to extract living magical echoes before they collapse into inert dead magic.
The Scavengers estimate their numbers at between 200 and 400 active operators spread across the Shattered-Coast, with smaller satellite communities operating in isolated echo-dead zones throughout the Wildlands. Their annual estimated output ranges from 500 to 800 bottles of refined resonance material, depending on the stability of known harvesting zones.
Methodology
The Scavengers’ core technique involves identifying active Echo-Dead zones — locations where dead magic concentrations overlap with residual magical echoes at sufficient intensity to maintain structural coherence. Once a zone is identified and classified by type (Perpetual Loop, Interactive Loop, or Threshold), the Scavenger team deploys specialized equipment designed to extract resonant energy before it dissipates.
The primary extraction device is known as a resonance siphon — a brass-and-crystal apparatus originally developed during the late First-Empire for studying magical echo decay rates. Modern Siphons are crude approximations built from salvaged First Empire components and improvised materials, but they remain effective at extracting resonant energy in controlled quantities. The process requires constant monitoring: if too much energy is drawn simultaneously, the zone destabilizes and the echoes collapse into inert dead magic, destroying the very material being harvested.
Extraction teams work in pairs or small groups of three to four operators. One member operates the siphon, another monitors the zone’s stability using Rift-Shards as resonance detectors, a third provides perimeter security against environmental hazards and, occasionally, rival scavenger factions. A typical harvest session lasts between two and six hours, depending on the zone’s volatility.
The Shattered-Coast Connection
The Scavengers’ primary operating territory is the Shattered-Coast — the unstable coastline east of the Great-Rift where echo-dead zones are most concentrated due to proximity to Cataclysm impact zones. The region’s perpetual geological and magical upheaval creates ideal conditions for both forming new Echo-Dead zones and preserving existing ones, making it ground zero for resonance harvesting operations.
The relationship between the Scavengers and the Rift-Touched settlements of the Shattered-Coast is complex and often contentious. From the Rift-Touched perspective, many views the Scavengers as exploiting their ancestral land — literally extracting echoes of events that occurred in their territory, including Cataclysm-era trauma that the local communities consider sacred ground. Some Rift-Touched elders describe the harvesting process as “screaming the land’s memories until they’re empty.”
However, not all Rift-Touched oppose Scavenger operations. A minority of operators are themselves Rift-Touched, and several Shattered-Coast families derive direct economic benefit from the trade — supplying food, equipment, and safe passage to independent teams in exchange for a percentage of the harvest or specialized resonance materials for their own healing practices. The Rift-Touched community of Havens-Edge maintains an informal licensing system that grants Scavenger teams permits to operate within designated zones, though enforcement is inconsistent due to the region’s instability.
Major Factions and Teams
Though the Resonance Scavengers have no central authority, several distinct operational traditions have emerged based on methodology, equipment, and preferred clients:
The Brass-Town Collectors
Based in the largest Shattered-Coast settlement of Havens-Edge, the Brass-Town Collectors represent the most organized and technically sophisticated faction. They use siphons built from genuine salvaged First Empire components (acquired through connections with The-Rust-Kings) and primarily serve academic clients at the University-Of-Valoria. Their work is methodical, well-documented, and produces the highest-quality resonance materials on the market. The Brass-Town Collectors maintain a formal relationship with Havens-Edge’s governance structure and pay licensing fees to the local council.
The Deep-Marked
Operating from hidden camps scattered throughout the most dangerous sections of the Shattered-Coast, the Deep-Marked are independent operators who specialize in extracting resonant energy from Interactive Loop zones — the most volatile type of Echo-Dead zone and the one that produces the most potent materials. Their methods are riskier than those of the Brass-Town Collectors, with a documented injury rate approximately three times higher. The Deep-Marked’s products command premium prices on the black market, particularly among Shadow-Cult sympathizers who seek resonance material for shadow realm manipulation techniques.
The Ash-Waste Runners
A smaller faction that operates primarily in echo-dead zones near the Ash-Wastes, the Ash-Waste Runners specialize in harvesting echoes of events connected to orcish and pre-Cataclysm cultural practices. Their materials are sought by elven scholars studying the Long-Memory, as well as by the Deep-Speakers tradition for necromantic communication purposes. The Ash-Waste Runners maintain working relationships with the Ash-Mesa-Gathering, though tensions occasionally arise when harvesting zones overlap with sacred orcish sites.
Clients and Market
The Resonance Scavengers’ products serve a diverse range of markets:
-
Academic research: The University-Of-Valoria is the largest single buyer of resonance materials, using them for archaeological studies (observing past events through extracted echoes), magical theory research, and teaching demonstrations. Master Orin Vael’s Divination School program alone accounts for approximately 20% of annual output.
-
Military intelligence: The-Gardener and various military intelligence organizations purchase resonance materials for classified programs attempting to extract actionable intelligence from looped events. These transactions are conducted through intermediaries to maintain deniability, and the actual results remain unconfirmed in open sources.
-
Religious and spiritual practitioners: The Moon-Circle, Veilwalker-Tradition, and certain Shadow-Cult factions use resonance material in dreamwalking rituals and shadow realm communication practices. The ethical implications of harvesting echoes for religious purposes are a subject of ongoing debate within these communities.
-
Private collectors: Wealthy individuals across Aethelgard, particularly among the noble houses of the Kingdom-Of-Valoria, commission custom resonance extracts — bottled echoes of specific historical events or personal experiences. The most expensive known transaction was a private commission by House Silverwind for an echo of a pre-Cataclysm elven ceremony, which reportedly cost 2,000 gold pieces.
Notable Incidents
The Caldera Collapse (circa 18 years ago)
A Deep-Marked extraction team accidentally destabilized an Interactive Loop zone near the Caldera Ruins while attempting to harvest a particularly powerful echo. The resulting zone collapse released a wave of resonant energy that killed two members of the team and caused a localized temporal distortion lasting approximately forty minutes. Survivors reported experiencing overlapping echoes of three separate time periods simultaneously — an event described as “being inside too many memories at once.” The Caldera Collapse remains the deadliest known incident in Scavenger history and led to informal safety standards among the Brass-Town Collectors, though these are not enforced on independent operators.
The University Affair (circa 12 years ago)
A University of Valoria procurement officer was caught purchasing resonance material from Deep-Marked sources rather than through official Brass-Town Collector channels. The materials turned out to be contaminated with residual shadow realm energy — a consequence of the Deep-Marked’s practice of harvesting Interactive Loop zones that occasionally overlap with Shadow-Realm access points. Several University researchers who used the contaminated material experienced temporary psychological disturbances, and the scandal led to stricter procurement regulations and increased oversight of Scavenger operations.
The Shattered-Coast Boycott (circa 5 years ago)
Following reports from Rift-Touched elders that harvesting was “draining the memory” of sacred Echo-Dead zones near their settlements, a coordinated boycott of Scavenger operations began in three major Shattered-Coast communities. The boycott effectively shut down approximately 15% of known operating zones for six months before being partially resolved through negotiations with Havens-Edge’s governance council. The resulting agreement established designated “memory preserves” — Echo-Dead zones where harvesting is prohibited — but enforcement remains a challenge given the region’s instability and the scattered nature of Scavenger operations.
Open Questions
- Is resonance harvesting actually depleting Echo-Dead zones over time, as some Rift-Touched elders claim? Or are these zones replenishing naturally through ongoing Cataclysm-related magical activity?
- What is the true extent of Shadow Council involvement in the Scavengers’ trade? Several Deep-Marked operators have been observed communicating with known Shadow Council sympathizers on the Silver Coast.
- Could the Deepdark creatures perceive resonance harvesting operations, and if so, do they respond to them in any way? No documented cases exist, but the possibility remains uninvestigated.
